Today was an interesting evening, as I had the pleasure to go
to a Jazz Festival. Granted, it was Blues 70% of the time, and the main event
was a Trance/Jazz Fusion group, it was nonetheless interesting for me.
I was invited out by Nagypapa's neighbors at Balaton, Andrez
and his wife. We went out at 7:30pm Local Time and rode our bikes up the
mountain (a large hill, really) towards Paloznak, where the festival was being
held. They said the distance was only 500m from the house, and in reality ended
up being somewhere between 700 and 900 meters.
Once we had arrived we began discussing the different groups
and their music, after having ordered food and wine of course. We talked about
the way the individual instruments added to the collective one of the band, and
how the drum's true nature lie in how well he could change the tone of a song
throughout the entirety of it, without the need of a solo (unlike other
instruments, like a guitar or a cello, which need a solo to properly showcase
the individual skill of the player.)
It came to me in a sudden storm of thought, induced of
course with alcohol and the passion for music, and I came to a sudden
realisation what my true passion was: the ability to take multiple elements and
mix them together with a sense of harmony.
It was a sudden revelation of sorts, where I realized that
everything in my life had some sort of combined unity. The exact examples I
used were how in music, different styles would clash with one another, such as
blues and jazz, but with the introduction of new age music, these individual
elements were combined to create a whole new genre, resulting in newer styles
like rock, jazz fusion, and, my personal favorite, alternative. It is in true
alternative spirit to meld different techniques to produce a unique and
individual tone that has never yet been experimented with, which results in
every band that can truly call itself "alternative" to have an individual
tone that is near impossible to replicate.
Likewise, I applied this theory to how architecture
functions; with many "modern style" architects coming about, we tend
to forget the older styles that had been considered the cultural
"alpha" for several generations. When I reflect on this fact, I feel
a certain sense of despair, for in a way progress has come to a halt. When
every "creative" mind comes to a mutual conclusion, there is a lack
of new ideas, and ultimately this results in a stalemate, and the term
"modern" becomes a redundant phrase, neither representing an actual
idea of modernity, nor truly conveying what can be called a new wave.
It is considerably disrespectful to every culture in the
world, to completely neglect its defining style in the architectural
perspective. I feel that there is a need to better understand the original
styles of multiple cultures, and apply them to the modern style. The end result
would be, what I could proudly say, "progress".
In this day and age, there is a significant lack of people
who have the ability to come to a compromise. Between architect and client,
there should be an understanding that an architects values should be respected,
but equally so, a clients wants and desires need to be fulfilled before one can
properly call themselves a dignified architect.
I feel that tonight, I learned a lot about myself. I found
my true nature, after long last. I am merely the shaper of multiple figures,
combining the dead and deceased with the newborn and living to create something
that has never before existing. Architecture, music, dance, performing; I have
finally found the connecting line between all my favorite hobbies. I have also
garnered a new amount of respect and appreciation for cultural diversity,
because nowhere else in the world exist the things I have seen today. This
level of serenity, and unique development, will never be seen anywhere else in
the world.
Unless I, as an architect, and as a student of my new-found
idealized passion, can introduce it as a unique concept.
